THAMUD PEOPLE AND PETRA

Surah 7 - Al-A'raf 

73. To the Thamud people (We sent) Salih, one of their own brethren: he said: " O my people! Worship Allah: you have no other god but Him. Now has come unto you a clear (Sign) from your Lord! This she-camel of Allah is a Sign unto you; so leave her to graze in Allah's earth, and let her come to no harm, or you shall be seized with a grevious punishment.

74. And remember how He made you inheritors after the 'Ad people and gave you habitations in the land; you build for yourselves palaces and castles in (open) plains, and carve out homes in the mountains; so bring to remembrance the benefit (you have received) from Allah, and refrain from evil and mischief on the earth."

77. Then they hamstrung the she-camel, and insolently defied the order of their Lord, saying: "O Salih! Bring about your threats, if you are a messenger (of Allah)!"

78. So the earthquake took them unawares, as they lay prostrate in their homes in the morning!

The Thamud people were the successors to the culture and civilisation of the "Ad people. They were cousins to the "Ad, apparently a younger branch of the same race. Their story also belongs to Arabian tradition, according to which their eponymous ancestor Thamud was a son of "Abir (a brother of Aram), the son of of Sam, the son of Noah. 

Their seat was in the northwest corner of Arabia (Arabia Petraea), between Madinah and Syria. It included both rocky country, and the spacious fertile valley (Wadi) and plains country of Qura, which begins just north of the city of Madinah and was traversed by the Hijaz Railway. 

When the Holy Prophet in the 9th year of the Hijrah led his expedition to Tabuk (about 400 miles of Madinah) against the Roman forces, on a reported Roman invasion of Syria, he and his men came across the archeological remains of the Thamud. 

The excavated rock city of Petra, near Ma'an, may go back to the Thamud, though its architecture has many features connecting it with Egyptian and Graeco-Roman culture overlaying what is called by European writers Nabataen culture. 

Who were the Nabataeans? They were an old Arab tribe which played a considerable part in history after they came into conflict with Antigonus I in 312BC. Their capital was Petra, but they extended their territory right up to the Euphrates. In 85 BC they were lords of Damascus under their king Haritha (Aretas of Roman history). For some time they were allies of the Roman Empire and held the Red Sea littoral. The Emperor Trajan reduced them and annexed their territory in AC105. The Nabataeans succeeded the Thamud of Arabian tradition. 

The Thamud are mentioned by name in an inscription of the Assyrian King Sargon, dated 715BC, as a people of Eastern and Central Arabia. With advance of material civilisation, they became godless and arrogant, and were destroyed by an earthquake.

MIDNIGHT MISADVENTURE

Mohamad, a former high ranking police officer, the son of padi farmers of Kota (Rembau) was my close friend and classmate at Tunku Besar Secondary (TBS), Tampin. We were Queen Scouts and hostelites. After retirement he has a penchant to organise gatherings of school chums. He called one day to come for a get-together of 66-68's at Royal Raja Chulan, Seremban on May 1. He sponsored me for the lunch gathering.

I left Tronoh for Kajang late evening a day earlier. About a dozen km before reaching the Tg Malim R&R the left rear tyre burst. Luckily I was doing the usual easy driving at 100km. I parked the car, a 1997 Rover sedan on the grassy shoulder and got the tyre replaced. Shining headlights of passing vehicles helped me to see against the darkness. 

I felt uneasy when I found that the spare tyre was low in pressure. Sure enough after 1km it flattened. I called Plusline but there was no service on the south way to Tg Malim. I decided to sleep in the car but could not. After half an hour an idea struck me, why not drive very slowly with the left pair of wheels on the grass shoulder and the right pair on the tar road? In that way the flattened left tyre would not shred to pieces  due to friction and damage the wheel. But I have to be careful not to hit the railing along the shoulder. In some sections of the road there are no grass shoulder but plain hard road.

For the next 10km or so I was doing at 10km/hr and reached the R&R about midnight! I was delighted and spent the night uncomfortably in the rear seat. The next morning after another 2km bumping on the grassy side I made it to a tyre shop in Tg Malim. Thank goodness they open shop on Labour Day. I haven't told anyone about this incident especially to wife.


p/s I had an experience similar to this 3-wheeler thing 12 years ago in Sarawak while driving from Mukah to Bintulu in a Rusa van. The replacement left rear tyre burst and soon shred to pieces on 3-wheel driving for nearly 30km before reaching a tyre shop at Selangau. Perhaps, this was a learning process which enabled me to cope with the recent misadventure.

Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (Yapeim) memberi jaminan akan menyemak semula ganjaran tinggi, mencurigakan dan tidak munasabah kepada pengurusan kanan itu.

Pengerusi Lembaga Pemegang Amanah (LPA) Yapeim  Tuan Haji Mohd Daud Bakar berkata Yapeim juga akan memberi ganjaran berdasarkan prestasi pekerja termasuk agensi itu secara keseluruhan.

Ganjaran itu juga akan mengambil kira keadaan ekonomi negara semasa, katanya dalam satu sidang media khas hari ini.

“Bagi pembayaran bonus kepada pihak pengurusan tinggi dan staf untuk 2018, pihak LPA Yapeim masih dalam perbincangan untuk menentukan formula dan kadar bonus kepada setiap staf termasuk pihak pengurusan kanan. 

“Formula penggiraan bonus yang terpakai sebelum ini pada tahun lepas tidak akan dipakai lagi dan akan mengambil kira prestasi kewangan semasa kumpulan Yapeim dan keadaan ekonomi negara,” katanya.

Tambahnya selain bonus kepada pihak pengurusan, LPA turut menyemak semula skim ganjaran peringkat jawatankuasa dan lembaga pengarah anak syarikat milik penuh Yapeim.

Beliau tindakan melibatkan 10 syarikat tersebut telah dilaksanakan bagi mengurangkan kos pengurusan sebanyak mungkin.

“Pihak LPA Yapeim akan terus membuat pemantauan untuk mempertingkatkan kebekerkesanan kos pengurusan,” katanya.

Dalam sidang media di Kuala Lumpur itu, beliau menjelaskan masalah itu merupakan antara isu yang diteliti LPA baharu untuk memulihkan semula Yapeim.

Beliau merupakan pengerusi LPA baharu yang dilantik pada November 2018 untuk menggantikan LPA lama.

Kenyataannya itu juga timbul selepas seorang pegawai Yapeim tampil mempertahankan pembayaran bonus dan gaji yang tinggi yan diberi kepada kepada pengurusan tertinggi .

Ketua Bahagian Perundangan Yapeim   Tuan Haji Adawiyah Abdul Samad dalam sidang media Ahad lalu berkata ganjaran itu berdasarkan skim polisi dan perkhidmatan agensi itu yang ditetapkan sejak dulu.

Pemimpin dan pengurusan kanan badan yang ditubuh kerajaan untuk meningkatkan ekonomi umat Islam itu dilaporkan menerima bonus tahunan setinggi RM250,000 hingga RM400,000.

Ia berdasarkan satu laporan penstrukturan semula yayasan itu yang diperolehi oleh The Malaysian Insight.

Laporan berkenaan juga mendakwa, bonus atau insentif tersebut dibayar tanpa melalui kelulusan lembaga pemegang amanah (LPA).

Menurut dokumen tersebut, LPA hanya berperanan meluluskan bayaran sedangkan keputusan berkenaan telah dibuat di peringkat pengurusan Yapeim.

Mengulas perkara itu,  Tuan Haji Adawiah berkata kesemua bayaran bonus perlu diluluskan pemegang amanah sebelum diagihkan kepada kakitangan.

“Proses ini perlu datang daripada (LPA). Jika lembaga luluskan, barulah kita boleh agihkan bonus tersebut,” katanya

SULTAN Selangor menggantung darjah kebesaran yang dikurniakan kepada bekas perdana menteri Najib Razak dan isteri Rosmah Mansor susulan tuduhan kes jenayah yang sedang mereka hadapi di mahkamah, kata Setiausaha Kerajaan Selangor Mohd Amin Ahmad Ahya.

Darjah kebesaran itu digantung berkuat kuasa 6 Mei lalu sehingga perbicaraan selesai, termasuk proses rayuan sekiranya ada, kata Mohd Amin dalam satu kenyataan, hari ini.

“Penggantungan gelaran dan penggunaan Darjah Kebesaran yang dikurniakan oleh DYMM Sultan Selangor ini akan disemak semula setelah kes dimuktamadkan di Mahkamah,” kata Mohd Amin dalam kenyataan itu.

Chelsea Manning has been released from jail after 62 days of confinement for refusing to testify before a grand jury.

The former army intelligence analyst, who leaked hundreds of thousands of state secrets to WikiLeaks in 2010, was released from the William G Truesdale adult detention center in Alexandria, Virginia, on Thursday after the grand jury she had defied expired.

But her liberation may yet be short-lived. According to her lawyers, even before she walked free, she was issued with a new subpoena ordering her to appear before another grand jury – possibly as soon as 16 May.

Manning’s two-month stint in custody bore echoes of the seven years she spent behind bars on a 35-year sentence for leaking one of the largest stashes of US state secrets in history. As with her military imprisonment, she served some of her jail time in solitary confinement.

GET LOST - TAMRIN ATAU SULTAN?

1.  Jika sekiranya Tun Mahathir Mohamad selaku Perdana Menteri tidak bertegas berhubung sekeping tanah di Bukit Chagar,  Johor, sudah pasti kos pembinaan  Sistem Aliran  Transit atau Rapid Transit System ( RTS ) akan meningkat lagi  sekurang - kurangnya sebanyak  RM500 juta.

2.   Tanah ini asalnya kepunyaan Negeri atau State Land tetapi telah diberi kepada Kerajaan Pusat dalam tahun 2012 dengan cara tukar ganti.

3.  Mengikut bebagai laporan media,  hanya 2 hari selepas  beberapa perbincangan  termasuk yang diadakan dengan Sultan Johor, tanah tersebut telah berpindah tangan dari Tanah Kerajaan Pusat menjadi kepunyaan Sultan.

4.  Katanya bagi mendapat sokongan Sultan secara terbuka menjelang pilihanraya umum yang baru lepas, tanah seluas 4.5 hektar itu yang telah dirancang bagi projek RTS diberi kepada Sultan secara PERCUMA oleh Najib.

5. Justeru mengatakan beliau TIDAK TAHU  MENAHU  pun tanah 'miliknya' itu akan di bina RTS adalah suatu pembohongan yang tidak boleh diterima oleh akal yang waras.

6.  Amat mustahil  semasa perbincangan di antara  Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat atau SPAD  dengan Sultan, langsung tidak disentuh berkenaan tapak pembinaan, keluasan tanah dan sebagainya.

7.  Sebenarnya penglibatan  Sultan di dalam perlaksanaan projek RTS dan projek lain TIDAK  PERLU dan TIDAK  BOLEH kerana ia adalah   tanggungjawab Pentadbiran, apatah lagi ianya bercanggah dengan Perlembagaan Negara yang melarang Sultan mencampuri hal ehwal Pentadbiran.

8.  Itulah akibat  apabila Sultan tersebut tahu dimana tapak RTS akan dibina, maka dalam tempoh 2 hari sahaja selepas dipersetujui tanah tersebut dipindahmilik kepada Sultan TANPA PEDULI akibat perbuatan tersebut.

9.  Kini tak sampai pun 24 jam selepas Perdana Menteri membuat ugutan, tiba - tiba Sultan cuba menunjukan beliau  seorang pemurah (???) dengan rela hati memberi kawasan tersebut secara percuma kepada Kerajaan Pusat sedangkan umum tahu tanah yang bernilai RM500 juta itu telah diberi secara percuma  kepada beliau oleh Najib; ini satu lagi drama yang dilakukan.

10.  Mungkin ketegasan Tun Dr. Mahathir itu membuatkan  beliau dan anaknya 'Seperti Cacing Kepanasan'.

11.  Bagi kepentingan umum, khasnya  Bangsa Johor atau rakyat Johor, Kerajaan Negeri HARUS mengeluarkan senarai tanah, projek sama ada sah atau melanggar undang - undang seperti penjualan pasir secara berluasa kepada Singapura, bauksit dan penglibatan beliau secara terus atau proksi di dalam mana-mana perniagaan di negeri itu; ini termasuklah sebidang tanah yang luas di Bandar Maharani, Muar untuk pembangunan, tanah Kuarters TNB di Stulang Laut yang dibeli dengan setengah nilai pasaran (value) kemudian dijual kepada pemaju Singapura, tanah perladangan kira-kira- kira 50 ribu ekar.

JCorp Bhd dan anak-anak syarikatnya pula TERPAKSA membantu menampung kos bola JDT.

Bagi mengelakkan sebarang keraguan, Kerajaan negeri juga perlu menyenaraikan tanah-tanah dan lain-lain termasuk jumlah kenderaan yang TIDAK BERBAYAR CUKAI import dan cukai jalan  yang TELAH DIPULANGKAN atau DIBERI secara percuma dan jumlah cukai kereta yang dibayar diumumkan.

12.  Baru - baru ini saya dikejutkan apabila membaca dan menonton video kenyataan yang dibuat oleh Sultan Johor pada bulan March 2017 ( sila lihat lampiran ).

13. " Get Lost "  yang membawa maksud " Sila Berambus " ;  ayat ini  biasanya  di gunakan oleh kaki rambu seperti Mat Rempit dan Mat Pit ( kaki dadah ) dan orang India di estet yang mabuk todi saja, BUKAN keluar dari mulut seorang Bangsawan yang bergelar Sultan.

14.  Lazimnya mereka yang telah diberi peluang duduk di dalam istana tambah pula dipertanggungjawabkan sebagai Ketua Agama Islam negeri, sepatutnya cukup berhemah dalam berkata-kata atau mengeluarkan kenyataan.

15.  Bagaimana seorang Sultan nak mendidik anak dan ahli keluarganya dengan baik sedangkan dia sendiri tak ubah seperti  'Ketam Mengajar Anaknya Berjalan Lurus’?

16.  Mungkin akibat sifat tamak  dan benci terhadap Tun Dr. Mahathir, di tambah pula dengan berbagai jenis dedak  maka ayat  'Get Lost'  itu dengan mudah terpacul dari mulut seorang Sultan.

17.  Inilah akibat nya apabila Sultan dan bakal penggantinya TIDAK mempunyai kelayakan pelajaran yang baik, tidak seperti Raja Nazrin, Sultan Perak dan beberapa Sultan lain yang  menjadi kebangaan rakyatnya; mereka tahu peranan dan amat menghormati Perlembagaan dan Undang - Undang Negara dan mempunyai akhlak dan sopan santun yang boleh dicontohi dan diteladani; sebaik-baik Sultan biarlah yang berilmu dan berakhlak mulia.

18.  Bapa Sultan Johor sekarang iaitu Sultan Mahmood Iskandar adalah PUNCA UTAMA mengapa Perlembagaan Negara TERPAKSA di pinda sebanyak 2 kali oleh Kerajaan UMNO / BN pimpinan Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir sebagai Perdana Menteri ketika itu; ia disokong sebulat suara oleh Ahli - Ahli Parlimen yang menghadiri Persidangan  Dewan Rakyat.

19.  Atas  perlindungan kekebalan ( immunity ) yang ada ketika itu Sultan Mahmood Iskandar telah menggila dengan menzalimi, mencedera malah membunuh beberapa orang rakyat sesuka hati baginda.

20.  Mengikut rekod Parlimen, Sultan Mahmood dan anaknya terlibat dengan   sekurang-kurangnya 23 kes jenayah. Wallahhualam!

21.  Sebagai salah seorang anggota EXCO Pergerakan Pemuda UMNO Malaysia ketika itu saya masih ingat suara - suara berang yang mahu membakar beberapa Istana tetapi hasrat mereka tidak kesampaian apabila Dr. Mahathir sendiri menasihatkan kami agar tidak meneruskan rancangan itu.

22. Johor adalah HAK RAKYAT BUKAN HAK SULTAN, apatah lagi Sultan yang ada hari ini adalah keturunan Temenggong Daeng Abdul Rahman yang berpakat dengan penjajah British mengenepikan Sultan yang sah yang telah melantik beliau sebagai Temenggong.

23. Temenggong Daeng Abdul Rahman pula telah mewasiatkan agar anak sulung beliau, Daeng Abdullah menggantikannya selepas beliau tiada tetapi semasa Temenggong Daeng Abdullah berada di Tanah Suci Mekah, adiknya Daeng Ibrahim berpakat dengan British merampas kuasa dan mengisytiharkan diri sebagai Temenggong yang baru - justeru keturunan inilah menjadi Sultan sehingga kini.

24. Berikut adalah keturunan Sultan Johor:-

i. Temenggong Daeng Abdul Rahman.

ii. Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim.

iii. Temenggong Daeng Abu Bakar atau Sir Albert Backer.

iii a. Menggelarkan diri sebagai Maharaja Johor.

iii b. Dengan persetujuan Queen Victoria, England menukar gelaran sebagai Sultan Johor dan mengisytiharkan keturunan beliaulah yang akan TERUS menjadi Sultan Johor selagi ada bulan dan matahari.

iv. Sultan Ibrahim - yang tidak mahu Merdeka dan sebaliknya mahukan British terus menguasai negeri itu.

v. Sultan Ismail - menggantikan anaknya Mahmood dengan Abdul Rahman sebagai Tengku Mahkota Johor kerana mencedera, menzalimi dan membunuh rakyat sesuka hati.

vi. Sultan Mahmood - pernah menjadi Agong.

vii. Sultan Ibrahim - kini.

viii. Ismail, TMJ bakal Sultan.

Berlandaskan kepada beberapa fakta di atas, adakah Sultan kini BERHAK menghalau ( Get Lost ) kepada sesiapa yang dia tidak suka?

Jawapannya ada pada rakyat Johor sendiri.

25. Sultan Johor dan anaknya harus meminta maaf dan berterima kasih kepada Tun kerana tanpa beliau mungkin Istana Bukit Serene dan beberapa Istana lain di Johor hari ini sudah menjadi tapak sejarah sahaja.

26. Tun dan rakyat TIDAK  berkonfrantasi dengan Sultan yang lain dan keluarga mereka - justeru jauh sekali terlintas di hati untuk mengenepikan Sultan dan keluarga mereka.

27. Jika sekiranya Sultan - Sultan TIDAK mampu menasihatkan Sultan Johor dan anaknya yang terlalu celupar itu, demi kebaikan adalah lebih baik Raja-Raja yang lain  mengasingkan diri dari mereka berdua.

28. JIKA  TAK  MAHU  MEMBALAS  BUDI ,  SEKURANG - KURANGNYA  INGATLAH  KEPADA  ORANG  YANG  TELAH  MENYELAMATKAN  KITA DAN GENERASI  SETERUSNYA.

29. ‘Kerana Pulut Santan  Binasa, Kerana Mulut Badan Binasa’.

30. Akhir kata, JANGAN  BIARKAN  KERANA SETITIK DUA NILA, MAKA  ROSAK  SUSU  SEBELANGA.

YAHYA - JOHN THE BAPTIST

(Surah 19 - Maryam)

7: "O Zakariya! We give you good news of a son: his name shall be Yahya: on none by that name We conferred distinction before."

8: He said: " O my Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?"

9: He said: So: your Lord says, 'that is easy for Me: I did indeed create you before, when you had been nothing!"

12: " O Yahya! Take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him Wisdom as youth.

13: And piety as from Us, and purity; he was devout,

14: And kind to his parents, and he was not overbearing  or rebellious.

Yahya baptised the Messiah at River Jordan, and so he is also called John the Baptist and Ma'amadan. He was the forerunner of Jesus. In accordance with his father's prayer, he renewed the Message of Allah, which has been corrupted and lost among the Israelites. The Arabic form of Yahya suggests "Life". The Hebrew form is Johanan, which means "Jehovah has been Gracious".

He was imprisoned by Herod, the tetrarch (provincial ruler  under the Roman Empire), whom he had reproved for his sins, and eventually beheaded upon a rock (sakrah) in Jerusalem at the instigation of a woman with whom Herod was infatuated. It is maintained by some that John was not killed in Jerusalem, but instead in Damascus. And until this day, there remains a monument for him in the Umawi Mosque.

In his young life, Yahya was granted 1) wisdom by Allah, for he boldly denounced sin; 2) gentle pity and love for all Allah's creatures, for he moved among the humble and lowly, and despised "soft raiment"; and 3) purity of life, for he denounced the world and lived in the wilderness.

The 2016 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi, 71, a cell biologist at the Tokyo Institute of Technology “for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy.”

Autophagy is the process by which cells capture large dysfunctional proteins, aging organelles, and invading pathogens in vesicles and then send them to the lysosome for degradation, said Juleen Zierath, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine in announcing the prize. “Without autophagy our cells won’t survive.”

Dysfunction of the autophagy process is life-threatening from birth through old age. For example, autophagy is disrupted in Alzheimer’s disease, when toxic protein aggregates are not properly discarded. As a consequence drugmakers have continued to eye the pathway as a therapeutic target.

Although researchers had known since the 1960s that cells cleaned up their large cellular garbage by enclosing it in vesicle sacks and sending it to the lysosome for degradation, in the 1990s, when Ohsumi began his work, nobody knew how the system worked, and what machinery was involved, Zierath says.

At the time, “people were not that keen to study how cells got rid of their trash—it was not considered sexy,” says Anne Bertolotti, who studies autophagy at MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, in Cambridge, and who hosted a visit from Ohsumi just a few weeks ago.

Ohsumi first noticed that you could induce baker’s yeast cells to produce autophagy vesicles under low nutrient conditions. This observation gave scientists the first method for controlling and studying the process, Bertolotti says. WHO CONTROL CHRISTIAN HOLY LAND?

Christian knights gave their lives to capture the Holy Land were defeated by the Muslims and more still now in vain due to the Israel land grab of Palestine.

The holiest sites of Christianity are all in Israel. That’s why Israel is the Holy Land, the Kingdom of Heaven. Thanks but no thanks  to Balfour, England, and the Queen, Israel holds the key to heaven. By putting the Palestinians in dire straits they are also in a perennial shit-hole but pretend not to be. The Jews will never forget the holocaust and further redemption is coming. General Allenby marched in victory into Jerusalem towards the end of WW2, thus the crusaders lost Jerusalem again! Let the goyim fought the war and kill among themselves. Auschwitz was collateral damage. We win in the end the Jews would say.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem

GOOD FRIDAY: Jesus was nailed to the cross, an event called the Crucifixion. Christians today wear a crucifix around their neck. The cross, upon which Jesus died, was staked on a hill named Calvary. It is located in Jerusalem.

Hours before his crucifixion, Jesus prayed to the Father in Garden of Gethsemane. Gethsemane is at the bottom of a slope on the Mount of Olives. The Church of All Nations is presently here.

The mother of Emperor Constantine built the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on this traditional site of Jesus’ Crucifixion … in Israel!

Side note: Constantine the Great is the Roman ruler of antiquity responsible for the expansion of the faith throughout his vast empire – what was later to become the realm of Christendom.

The city of Constantinople – today Istanbul – was the capital of the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire before the Ottoman conquest. Along with Constantinople, the Byzantium cities of Alexandria (in Egypt) and Antioch (in Turkey) were major centres of early Christianity, as was Rome in the Western Roman Empire.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was rebuilt by the Crusaders when they conquered Jerusalem from the Muslims.

The Christian knights established their Crusader States in the Middle East between the years 1102 and 1291 CE, centering around the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

EASTER SUNDAY: After Jesus died, he was buried in the tomb still preserved inside the aforementioned historic church. ‘Sepulchre’ in general means tomb or burial place. In its Biblical usage, sepulchre refers to the cave where Jesus was buried.

A structure called the aedicule preserves the location of Jesus’ tomb.

The Resurrection is when the Christ was raised from the dead. This miracle occurred in Jerusalem, I-S-R-A-E-L.

According to the scripture, Jesus ascended into heaven in the vicinity of Bethany, a village down the slope of the Mount of Olives. The Church of the Holy Ascension is here and “contains what is traditionally the last footprint of Jesus on earth” in Jerusalem … which is in I-S-R-A-E-L.

Ascension in Christianity is “the bodily rising of Jesus into heaven on the 40th dayafter his Resurrection” from the physical location of Jerusalem. In Israel!

Jesus of Nazareth and Israel’s other biblical connections

Jerusalem is the pilgrimage destination where there is a church for any Christian whatever his denomination. Or in other words, the most important churches – be they Greek Orthodox, Byzantium, Catholic, Russian Orthodox or ancient churches built and rebuilt again through the ages – they’re all here.

And whatever place names in the Bible, they’re all here in Israel too.

Jesus is associated 17 times with Nazareth in the New Testament.  “Jesus of Nazareth” -  it was where he grew up. Nazareth was then a small village in the foothills of Galilee; today it has grown into a city in northern Israel.

The beautiful Basilica of the Annunciation (pix below) is here in Nazareth. The ‘Annunciation’ is when angel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary that she would conceive. Becoming the mother of baby Jesus is called the Immaculate Conception.

Second Coming of Christ linked to New Jerusalem 

Israel is simply overflowing with sites sacred to Christians, recounted in both the New and Old Testaments.

Jerusalem is also known as the City of David. The Hebrew King David ruled the Kingdom of Israel and Judah c.1000 BCE. Jesus was descended from the royal line of King David.

The gates of a golden city of prophecy, New Jerusalem, are pivotal to the ‘end times’ from the Bible’s Book of Revelation.

Mount Carmel – referenced variously in the Bible – lies south of Haifa, today the third-largest city in Israel. Carmel gives its name to the famous Carmelite religious order of monks and nuns. To the southeast of Haifa is the site of Megiddo where Armageddon (End of the World Battle) is anticipated to erupt.

Places from the biblical ministry of Jesus

The cornerstone of the teachings of Christ is his Sermon on Mount.

Mount of Beatitudes got its name from Jesus’ most beloved sermon that begins, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”.

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” is another well-known Beatitude.

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:3-11).

Mount Hermon, better known as Mount Sion/Zion, is where Jesus took the disciples. This location is mentioned in Psalm 133:3 and Song of Songs 4:8.

Mount Zion overlooks the Plain of Gennesaret where Jesus often preached, including the time when he healed the multitudes. Gennesaret is southwest of Capernaum, where Jesus lived after he left Nazareth. The archeological site of the old Capernaum ruins is in modern-day Israel.

The Church of the Beatitudes sits overlooking the Sea of Galilee – actually a freshwater lake.

Galilee’s lake was where Jesus stilled the raging storm (Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25) and where he walked on water (Matthew 14:26). Near its shores Jesus fed the five thousand men, women and children through the miracle of Fish and Loaves – a popular story told in all four of the Gospels.

On the edge of the awesome Sea of Galilee (below) at Capernaum lies the Church of the Twelve Apostles.

Biblical places not yet under Israeli control

The Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus in the town of Bethlehem. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is build at the location where Jesus was born.

Bethlehem comes under Palestinian jurisdiction for the time being although this may change in the near future since the Jews have just elected a hard right and ultra religious new Knesset (parliament). President elect Binyamin Netanyahu has indicated to Jewish voters that he will annex settlement areas in the West Bank.

Mount Sinai where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments is on the Sinai peninsula, Egypt. Israel captured Sinai in the 1967 Arab war but returned the territory to Egypt in 1982 in exchange for peace.

Israel still controls the Golan Heights, also won in the 1967 war. Recently President Donald Trump said America recognized Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights (below) which is now most unlikely be returned to Syria.

As can be gleaned from the landmarks referenced above, Israel and Christianity are inseparable. The soul of Israel permeates every page of the Bible – from the Old Testament (Tanakh in Hebrew) to the New Testament. Jesus was after all a Jew.
