MODERN DAY KELABIT HIGHLANDS

The Kelabit Highlands located in the mountains bordering Kalimantan in northeast Borneo is a paradise out of nowhere.


Apart from the Kelabits, there are the Lun Bawang, Saban, Penan, and Kenyah communities living there. Ba' Kelalan (northern tip of map below) is where some apple is being grown.

The Highlands is accessible by Twin Otter flights from Miri. It is pitiful that there is no proper road built except for timber track to to such a pleasant location.

RISDA - A KETUM ADDICT

The mandate for RISDA (Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority) is to help  smallholders to grow rubber - planting materials, replanting, subsidy, advisory etc. Smallholders are encouraged to grow cash crops between the rubber rows during the first few years of replanting. 

Now RISDA wants to commercialise ketum planting. There is money for export. They cannot farm out the plantings because of difficulty to control abuses. But, first and foremost, the law must legalise ketum at least in the production. Is there a haram fatwa proclaimed already?

If RISDA has the monopoly to grow ketum legally then they might as well get into the business of more lucrative cannabis (hemp) cultivation on the premise   for medical use.
