Meeting of minds. On August 29, Presidents Sadat and Qaddafi signed an agreement merging Egypt with Libya - at least in theory, if not in fact.

Detente in the desert. U.S.-Egyptian relations, strained since the 1950's, took a definite turn for the better this year. One sign of improvement was Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's friendly reception of President Nixon during his mid-June Middle East tour.

Anwar Sadat died in a hail of bullets fired from an auntomatic weapon by a soldier during an annual military parade in Cairo. Anwar must die.
