The orang utan is also known as mawas (Malay) or maias (Eng), a corruption of the former. They are found in the Borneo, the third largest island in the world. Eons ago they may perhaps inhabit a much lager homeland when there were land bridges connecting the land masses in the archipelago. Somehow, a large community of them became isolated and continued to breed in Borneo.
