Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991 after 2 centuries of Russian rule. The Kazakhs are of Mongolian and Turkic origin. The country has 14 provinces (oblystar). Nursultan Nazarbayey is the President.

Kazakhstan is a beautiful country with contrasting landscapes (deserts, steppes, forests, snowy mountains) and diversity of people (also Russians, Slovaks, Germans) and culture. The country is steeped in history (Golden Horde, Silk Road).
