STOUT IS GOOD FOR YOU

advertisement of the past

Se-tegok Guiness Stout membuka selera. Sa-gelas Guinness Stout memuleh tenaga. Kerana tiap2 gelas Guinness Stout mengadongi khasiat.

The colonials left many legacies. One is hard drinking that permeated right to the very heart of Malay society.

When I was growing up in the kampong, say circa 60 years ago, I noticed several times that the plump pot-bellied Penghulu Mukim of Gemencheh by the name of Osman would be sitting by a round marble table in a Chinese coffee shop taking a hard drink, whisky probably.

My father, worked hard as a rubber tapper. He was a share-cropper meaning that his take home wage was 50%. He was using a bicycle to go tap a 5ac rubber plot on a hillock. After his monthly sale of dried rubber sheets at the Chinese rubber dealer he would buy this dark coloured liquid and a packet of peanuts for after dinner drinking session. I could see the bubbles oozing when he poured the stout into the glass. I sat beside him waiting for the last bit left in the bottle and drank it. I did not like the taste. My father was not into stout to get drunk but to be rejuvenated as claimed by the advertisement. I did help him in several ways to process the latex into rubber sheets using a pair of milling machines and dry them in the sun for some days.
